Orta San Giulio.
Itinerary winding through the nature reserve of Sacro Monte.
All year round
To reach the starting point, take the A26 motorway, leaving at the exit for Gravellona Toce. Follow the signs for Omegna: after the town of Casale Corte Cerro, follow the signs for Orta San Giulio.
Description of the itinerary
Set amidst the green of the woods on a hilltop overlooking Lake Orta, Sacro Monte has 20 chapels built between the late sixteenth and late eighteenth century with frescoes and sculptures in terracotta on the life of St. Francis.
In addition to the artistic heritage, the natural features are of equal interest: the special nature reserve’s habitat is characterized by the environment and natural influences of the nearby lake. We recommend a route that attempts to avoid any problems regarding the slopes and steep, cobbled steps and takes into account the presence of rock slide. From the Reserve office continue to Piazzale del Cantico di San Francesco - Chapel 13, turn left and after 20 metres turn right behind the restaurant and you will reach Chapel 1, starting the Via Crucis of St. Francis. From Chapel 13 go past the stone columns and turn right onto the lawn. From the front of the Basilica, enjoy the exceptional view of the lake. Extension: you can reach Orta San Giulio, opposite the island of San Giulio, going by car from the road near Villa Crespi to Piazza Motta (allowed for the disabled). A visit to Legro, the painted village, is also recommended.
Type of route: unpaved road and reinforced gravel.
