Re Sanctuary

Description of cycle route

Of the many beauties that characterise the Vigezzo Valley, the location that stands out the most for its charm and impressiveness is the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sangue in Re, where it is said that a fresco dedicated to the Blessed Virgin began to miraculously bleed. A splendid church was erected to celebrate this event during the course of the centuries still
maintaining its charm up until this vey day. The church of Re could even represent the destination of a beautiful itinerary that, starting from
Domodossola, crosses the valley. The first kilometres on flat land on the way to Masera help warm up the muscles. From Masera the road begins to climb running alongside the woody wall of the mountain. The gradients are never impossible, even if the climb is over 10 km long and certain steeper sections require a certain amount of training not to “suffer” too much. The asphalt is in good condition and the road quite wide; the only difficulty is the Paiesco tunnel, very convenient for drivers but rather annoying for cyclists who have to cycle for a few minutes in the closed without seeing the landscape. Once out of the tunnel the flourishing vegetation keeps you company once again. Once at this point, the last push awaits; the demanding straight that leads to Druogno, before being able to enjoy the flat part ideal for regaining energy and appreciating all the beauty of the Valley of Painters. Past Santa Maria, at the junction before Malesco, turn left, still a few kilometres on a slight climb, the final push and then before your very eyes the Re Sanctuary in all its glory… And it will be a real conquest having completed this cycling venture. After resting and drinking a little cold water at the fountain you can set off once again for Domodossola with the wind in your face.
