Sanctuary Boden

The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Boden, situated at 475 m above sea level, is located just above Ornavasso.
Before it became a sanctuary, the building was a consecrated oratory, which was built on a pre-existing chapel where (according to tradition) Mary appeared to a young shepherdess. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century, the choir, the chapels of S. Giulio and S. Bartolomeo, the sacristy and a portico were built on to the oratory.
On the other hand, the subsequent extensions, namely the side aisles and the renovation of the altar, were carried out during the first half of the nineteenth century (1825-1837). Today, the building has a nave with two side aisles divided by four arches, the last two of which open up onto the presbytery.
On the eighth of September of each year, many believers go on a pilgrimage to the Madonna del Boden in honour of the birth of Mary. A coach service is available to assist pilgrims on the feast day.
Alternatively, one may opt for a healthy walk "along the road of faith", perhaps stopping to pray at the chapels of the Stations of the Cross. After the difficult climb and having reached the grassy square in front of the Sanctuary, one may quench one's thirst with spring water from the distinctive drinking fountain.
