Monastery of the Purification

Odd and rather characteristic is the story of the Monastery of the Purification, that is the first female monastery established in 1590 by the Aronese Dame Clemenza Ruga and sponsored by Federico Borromeo’s mother, Lady Margherita Trivulzio Borromeo. Starting from 1598, the year when it was acknowledged by the ecclesiastical authorities, purpose of the monastic congregation under the name of Purification of the Virgin Mary was to educate and give hospitality to young girls. The convent was eliminated in 1810 during the domination of Napoleon. Of the original structure there still remains a nice cobbled courtyard with a fountain. Following the elimination of the congregation the building was destined for civilian use, so that in the early XX century it was transformed into a pub (Quaranta). Now, following partial take-over by the Municipality, it is the seat of the Town Library.
