Church of the Holy Mary of Loreto

Through the centuries this church located on Piazza del Popolo, earlier known as Piazza Maggiore, was given various other names, such as for example Church of Saint Marta (seat of the homonimous brotherhood) or Church of Saint Mary of Loreto.
The construction was committed by Margherita Trivulzio Borromeo and her son Federico (at the time not yet a cardinal), but based on documents recently discovered, the project, generally attributed to Pellegrino Tibaldi, architect of the Borromeo family, is instead to be attributed to Martino Bassi. The façade by Francesco Maria Richini presents a pronaos supported by columns and an elegant two-ramps flight of stairs. The single hall interior presents a fanlight barrel vault, under which stands majestically the main altar built with white and black marble and dominated by the valuable marble statue representing Our Lady of the Assumption by Marcantonio Prestinari, who was also working on the Cathedral of Milan.
