Villa Stampa, Alessandro Manzoni's historical residence in Lesa just opposite to Lake Maggiore, will be open from June 15 to September 15.
A very special occasion not to miss for those who like to know better the life and works of one of the most important Italian literary men of the past.
On the beautiful lake shores the famous writer of "Promessi Sposi" spent in fact his spring and summer holidays. The villa was a private property of Manzoni's second wife, Teresa Borri, who was the widow of Count Stefano Decio Stampa.
In a part of the villa the so called Manzoni's Room was realised some years ago following the will of then-mayor Giuseppe Marenzi. Consequently the elegant house consists in a carefully furnished museum where one can admire the great writer's working objects and manuscripts and, at the same time, in an intimate resort where he could pass everyday life together with his family ties and personal objects (f.e. the desk, the armchair, the books and his letters, his glasses, his heirlooms, etc.). But Villa Stampa was a cultural centre too: there Manzoni used to meet his well-kown friends such as the poet Giulio Carcano and the philosopher Antonio Rosmini. At the point of death Giulio Carcano himself, who had been staying in Lesa for long times, decided to bequeath to the Municipality the furniture of his study, which now can be seen in Manzoni's Museum.
Villa Stampa will open everyday except on Mondays from 10.00 to 11.30 and from 15.30 to 18.00.
